Mother-Friendly Providers

It can be challenging to find the care you desire during pregnancy.  We encourage moms to listen carefully to their intuition when communicating with care providers.  If you feel uncertain or uncomfortable, it is important to explore this reaction and sometimes to seek another provider.

We’ve compiled a list of local resources that have proven to be Mother-Friendly.  This list is by no means exhaustive.  If you would like to recommend someone to add to our list, please use our contact form and we will follow-up with them.  Or, if you are a care provider who embodies the Mother-Friendly Care Initiative, let us know so we can add your name.

Together we can promote Mother-Friendly Care in the Upstate.

Out-of-Hospital Birth Care Providers: In SC, midwives are licensed by DHEC and attend births in homes and at freestanding birth centers.  Professional midwives provide care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.  They recognize birth as a normal life event.  Click here for our local midwives.

Hospital Birth Care Providers: Physicians and Certified Nurse Midwives typically attend births in hospitals.  A woman may choose between a certified nurse midwife (CNM), family physician who practices obstetrics or an obstetrician.  An obstetrician is often required for a high-risk or surgical birth.  Click here for a list of CNM’s and physicians practicing mother-friendly care.

Doulas: A doula is a professional who provides non-medical care to a  family during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.  She is independent of the medical care provider and works only for the family to support their desires.  Click here for a list of local doulas.

Childbirth Educators: An independent childbirth educator provides comprehensive information on labor, consumer issues, and techniques for a satisfying birth.  Click here for a list of childbirth educators.

Lactation:  It is important to know the breastfeeding resources in your community.  Click here for a list of lactation specialists.

Other Care Providers: Staying low-risk is a significant part of experiencing a satisfying birth.  Chiropractors, acupuncturists, and other alternative practitioners can offer benefits to expectant women.  Click here for a list of other care provider.
